Summary 2012

On 20 May, 18 180 participants from 59 countries lined up on the starting line of the Nordea Riga Marathon for four different races spanning various distances.

The winner of this year's Nordea Riga Marathon was Kurgat Titus Kipkorir (Kenya) with the time of 02:16:53. The women’s race was won by Iraida Aleksandrova (Russia) with a time of 02:37:37.

The top Latvian runner for this year was Andrejs Jesko who completed the marathon in a time of 02:34:22. In the women’s race, the fastest time by a Latvian runner had Indra Pluce who reached the finish with the time 03:13:47. Both top Latvian marathon runners were awarded two prizes at once – the Riga Mayor’s Cup and Nordea Bank’s Special Prize. Of all the athletes to run the full marathon distance, 56% were runners from overseas. One should note that a lot of Finnish runners opt to run their spring marathon in Riga – this year one fifth of the marathon competitors came from Finland. In the full marathon distance out of 1092 athletes registered to compete - 902 runners reached the finish.

This year for Nordea Riga Half-Marathon the best runners were from Latvia. Men’s race was won by Valērijs Žolnerovičs who completed the 21 km course with time of 01:06:04. The women‘s race was won by Jeļena Prokopčuka in a time of 01:10:27 who improved half-marathon course and aslo race record by 4 min 34 sek. In the half marathon, initial results show that out of 2 690 registered participants, 2 363 runners finished the race.

In 10K race the best were Latvian athletes – in men’s race Kristaps Kaimiņš with the time 00:33:12 and in women’s race Irīna Štūla-Pankoka with the time 00:39:34. For 10K race out of 3 425 registered participants 2 913 runners finished the race.

The 5K race attracted the biggest number of runners with 10 973 runners setting out on the morning of 20 May. As expected 5K race podium was exclusively occupied by Latvian athletes. Kaspars Briška covered the 5 kilometre distance fastest in a time of 15 minutes and 52 seconds. In turn, the fastest finisher in the women’s race was Diāna Panovska in a time of 00:19:34.
